Abstract

Recent estimates indicate that the global population is facing a diabetes epidemic, with increasing disease prevalence and complications. However, advancements in understanding diabetes pathophysiology have opened new avenues for developing novel therapies. Traditional medicinal plants containing phytochemicals are being explored as potential sources of therapeutics to combat diabetes and its complications. This article provides an overview of diabetes pathobiology, the therapeutic effects of medicinal plants/phytochemicals, and discusses the status and future prospects of these medicines in addressing the disease.
